
The 2nd Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club
Sir Catchick Paul Chater, CMG Chev Leg d’ Hon LLD JP (1846-09-08 –1926-05-27)was renowned for his vision and leadership.
He was a prominent British businessman of Armenian descent in colonial Hong Kong.
Being unofficial member of the Executive and Legislative Councils, he was very influential in the social, political and commercial sectors of the society in the late 19th and early 20th century.
HIGHLIGHTS
1846-09-08, Catchick Paul Chater was born in Calcutta.
1864, Chater came to Hong Kong.
1865, he first attended a meeting at Happy Valley.
1869, he lived in Caine Road.
1870, inaugural run of the Champion Race.
1884, he was one of the founding members when The Hong Kong Jockey Club was formed.
1885, He introduced his friend Sir Hormusjee Mody (Mody Road was named after him) to racing.
1886, they once owned a stable together with great success.
1887, he and Sir Hormusjee won 17 out of the 26 races in total over the years.
1889, Sir Paul won eight Hong Kong Derbies while his friend, Sir Hormusjee, won eleven.
1890, he helped Patrick Manson establish Dairy Farm.
1891, he established Hongkong Land with James Johnstone Keswick, the taipan of Jardine Matheson. Hong Kong Land commenced the land reclamation project under the Praya Reclamation Scheme.
1892, he had been Chairman of HKJC until his death.
1915, he established the precedent of any surplus being donated to charity.
1926, almost his last act as Chairman before he died, he championed a special resolution admitting Chinese to membership of the Club.
1926-05-27, (aged 79) he passed away and bequeathed Marble Hall and its entire contents, including his unique collection of porcelain and paintings, to Hong Kong Government.
1926, “The Champion Stakes” ran since 1870 was renamed to “The Chater Cup”.
1955, the race has been renamed to Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup.
2010, strategic partnership was introduced with Standard Chartered (Hong Kong) Limited and it has been further renamed to Standard Chartered Champions and Chater Cup.

SUMMARY
Sir Paul was interested in all kinds of sport. He had been a chairman of the Jockey Club more than one-third of a century.
From1872 to 1926, he played a very important part in Hong Kong horse racing before and after the founding of HKJC.
He donated HKJC surplus to charity and accepted Chinese memberships.
REFERENCE
There were anecdotes circulating that he had one of his famous horses named CHATER which won prominent prizes and races competing between Shanghai and Hong Kong. It may be the origin of “The Chater Cup”.
Sir Paul is credited with guiding the Jockey Club through its early years which the Cup could be named after him.
